RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML format originally designed for
sharing news through text feeds. It does so by providing subscribers with abstracts of news
and other content and providing links to expanded versions of that content. Users are then
able to stay current with news and information they seek, following updates, changes, or
revisions in material of interest.
Its expansion to include audio feeds has made it
an integral part of podcasting. By means of an aggregator, which checks RSS feeds for
preselected material, content can be downloaded to the desktop in the background at
pre-determined times or listeners can be notified by e-mail of any new developments or
revised, updated content.
